This is a great question, and one that thousands of people ask every week. In this less than stellar economy more people than ever are desperate for a plan B.
You’re fed up working the traditional 9 to 5 and trading hours for dollars. You’ve been trying to get ahead for years, and then SMACK – the realization that it’s just not possible while trading your precious hours for fleeting dollars hit you square upside the nugget. But what choice do you really have? After all, you can’t magically conjure more hours in a day to spend working (not that you’d want to)!
Does this sound familiar?
One of the best ways to break this cycle is start your own business that allows you to create residual income that leverages every bit of work that you do.
It may sound far fetched, but it’s exactly what we did a few short years ago and since have helped many others find financial freedom!
How did we do it?
1 : the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions; specifically : the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business.
NOTE: It’s called networking, not netwishing or netsittingonthecouch. To complete this journey you have to be willing to work. It’s not necessarily hard work, but creating a lasting business will force you out of your comfort zone.
Networking is all about building lasting, meaningful relationships with people.
In the NSN Blog you’ll find that we focus on two different platforms that both leverage the power of networking to create and exponentially grow a residual income.
1. Network marketing & direct sales (check out The Truth About Network Marketing…)
2. Blogging and social media
These are the two areas in which we’ve spent the last few years honing our skills.
You may notice that some of our content bridges the gap between business and life, and not by accident. After all, what is life if not creating lasting and meaningful relationships with those around you?
It’s pretty cool when by working a business that you love, you discover that you’re living a more meaningful, fulfilled life.
If you’re not independently wealthy now, odds are you won’t be unless you change your thinking and actions.
You will need an action plan, and that’s precisely what we created NorthStarNetworker.com (NSN) to be.
If this is your first time here, invest five minutes in reading the two posts below. This important material will help you grasp several foundational concepts that are key to successful entrepreneurship and creating flows of residual income that will last a lifetime. That’s the ultimate goal, right?
So why get started in Network Marketing or online business?
It’s difficult to narrow down what we love about our industry to 3 things, but for the sake of simplicity…
- Your success in both Network Marketing and online business hinges on you – what you do each day to learn and grow both as a person and in business. It has nothing to do with bosses, and you can’t get fired or laid off. You can only fail if you quit or do nothing.
- Residual income or passive income. The two BEST kinds of income. Imagine going to work once and getting paid for it day after day. Residual income requires a small amount of work to maintain, while true passive income requires even less. Both types of income take advantage of systems of automation to allow paychecks to arrive week after week, month after month.
- You can choose a product, service or start a blog that you’re passionate about. When you find your passion, work really isn’t work!
I can’t describe the feeling when Sarah and I wake up and see that we’ve earned money over night. There’s something truly liberating about not having to trade hours for dollars.
That being said, make no mistake – it’s not a cake walk. It’s not a way to “get rich quick”.
Generating passive or residual income is not easy and does not happen overnight. In some cases it can take years.
Don’t let that scare you! It is possible, and with a solid plan we can and will make it happen.
Once you decide what passion you’d like to pursue it will be time to create the online presence that you’ll use to connect with the world.
There are no shortage of options, and choosing what’s best for you can be a confusing mess.
You can hire a professional web designer, use a free blogging platform, write on free article publishing sites or create a self hosted blog.
Creating a self hosted website or blog on WordPress.Org is the clear winner for several reasons.
First off, hiring a professional is expensive. You can expect to pay upwards of $5,000 for a professionally designed website.
Many of the free platforms claim ownership of all content that you publish with them. Customization is limited to a few pre-made themes that countless others are using and the ads that they place on your page draw viewers away from you without giving you a dime of any resulting revenues.
A self hosted website on WordPress.Org is the medium that most professional bloggers use, and a website or blog can be set up from scratch in as little as 4 minutes with no coding experience needed. Self hosting with WordPress.Org also allows virtually unlimited customization which can be done by you or someone you hire. Everything is modular, and there are thousands of plugins that help with social media, search engine optimization (SEO), email newsletters, and more. You can also easily add custom video, images or sound throughout.
As you probably guessed, the NSN Blog is a WordPress.Org website hosted through BlueHost.
Below we’ll take you step by step through the process of selecting a host, buying a domain, installing WordPress and publishing your first post. It’s a lot easier (and cheaper) than you think!
STEP 1. Choose a domain name
It’s time to let those creative juices flow! This will be your online identity so it’s best not to rush this step.
You will want your domain name to be a short, concise description of your brand message and should fit with the theme of your site. A general rule is the shorter the better, although short domain names can be pricey. Choosing a domain name under twelve characters is a good rule of thumb but not an absolute must.
You’ll want it to be unique, clever, and easy to remember.
We chose NorthStarNetworker.com for the common underlying theme of our site (networking), and because the North Star has been a nautical guide helping ships keep a true course for thousands of years. We’re a guide through the world of networking!
Another consideration when tossing ideas around is search engine optimization, or SEO. When organically choosing sites to list in response to a certain search term, or keyword, it is thought that search engines will examine your domain name for this keyword. What words would people search to find your site? For more on researching the perfect keywords check out The Beginners Guide to Keyword Research.
STEP 2. Choose a host
Your web host is where the actual code and files that make up your site are located. There are two different main types of hosts; shared hosts and dedicated hosts. Shared hosts are affordable and ideal for newcomers. In a shared host, a single server will contain multiple sites, so high traffic on one has the potential of reducing load time on another site. In most cases this isn’t an issue, and your site can be migrated to a dedicated host when it grows large enough.
There are several popular and affordable hosting companies. GoDaddy, Host Gator and BlueHost to name a few. We personally host with BlueHost and have been happy with the fast page load times, affordability (less than $5/month), ease of use, and friendly customer support.
We use BlueHost, but our best advice is to go where you feel comfortable!
